Abstract
Tadabbur (reflective contemplation) of the revealed verses of the Holy Qur'an has emerged both as a distinctive exegetical approach and as a developing school of Qur'anic interpretation that seeks to uncover the interrelationships among Qur'anic expressions and to attain a deeper understanding of the meanings and messages of the divine revelation. The present study aims to examine the Qur'anic verses related to tadabbur and to analyze them in light of major exegetical approaches. The central research question concerns the significance of tadabbur in the Holy Qur'an as understood through the interpretations of Qur'anic exegetes (mufassirūn) and the verses that explicitly address this concept. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the study investigates the semantic and interpretive dimensions of tadabbur within the Qur'anic discourse. The findings indicate that tadabbur signifies the thoughtful comprehension, profound apprehension, and wise acceptance of divine discourse. In the Qur'anic context, it denotes insight (baṣīrah) into the meanings of revelation and the recognition of the intrinsic coherence and consistency of its message. Owing to its indispensable role in understanding religious knowledge, tadabbur receives particular emphasis in such verses as Q. 4:82, 23:68, 47:24, and 38:29. These verses highlight several foundational themes, including the absence of contradiction (ikhtilāf in the sense of inconsistency) within the Qur'an, its divine origin as revelation from the Supreme Source, the continuity and confirmation of earlier revealed teachings rather than the introduction of unprecedented doctrines, the warning against hearts that are sealed (aqfāl al-qulūb) and thus incapable of reflection, and the distinguished status of the Ulū al-Albāb (people of sound intellect) as the true practitioners of Qur'anic contemplation.
